Winter Solstice Blessings & Ritual

Happy Winter Solstice! The longest night of the year, the reset button, a time to honour the dark.

December 21, Winter Solstice and Capricorn Season

I’ve been to two winter solstice events recently and the theme was similar: slow down, let go, start anew. The Winter Solstice is the time of year we are in the dark, sometimes in the physical sense with the sun barely over the horizon, sometimes in the spiritual or emotional sense. We’re encouraged to gather together with the people that bring us warmth and love. Connection during this cold time can warm our hearts and spirits.

We live in a society that seems to get busier at a time nature asks us to rest. There are endless to do lists, shopping, gatherings and s-t-r-e-s-s! With the Winter Solstice comes the new season of Capricorn. Boundaries are a key element for Capricorn. Setting them, honouring them, sometimes being a little too rigid with them. It can go either way. I also think it’s a time where whatever boundaries you are setting or have set are tested. But Capricorn, being industrious and hardworking, can bring the discipline you need to hold the line.

Solstice is the end and the beginning. Death and rebirth. The sun is coming back and with it the energy and brightness we carry within our selves. There is a quick way to celebrate below. Nothing fancy or involved because if you’re like me, you’re done before the holidays have even begun. I am looking forward to the void between Christmas and New Years to rest and find the joy in each day. There is magic! Even if it’s just holding that cup of coffee or tea close.

A Solstice Ritual

As we near the end of the year, there are always thoughts turning towards what resolutions will I make? Who is the “new me” going to be in 2026.

Let’s instead, look at what we are leaving behind. When we make space by letting go, something new can enter.

Write down 1 thing you wish to leave in 2025.
Some ideas to journal or think about.
What patterns have come up for me that I know don’t serve me?
What part of myself am I ready to let go of?
What dream or part of myself have I been hiding out of fear?
What is the heaviest thing (a habit, a worry, or a relationship) that I carried in 2025 that I refuse to carry into 2026?

Take this paper and rip it up or burn it (safely)

Now that I’ve let this go, what am I making room for in 2026?
Write this down and keep it in a book, desk drawer, or plant it in dirt. You are planting the seed for 2026.

Happy Solstice friends!!
